Cybersecurity Starts with People: Why Teamwork Keeps Our Digital World Safe
Recently, Mr. Olumbe Akinkugbe, Executive Director of Digital Exploration and Technical Services at Galaxy Backbone Ltd, spoke at a very important gathering in Abuja. The event was the first stakeholder session to discuss setting up the Ministerial Advisory Council on Cybersecurity Coordination.
During his speech, Mr. Akinkugbe shared a clear and powerful message: keeping our digital world safe is not just about computers and software. It starts with people, and it requires us to work together.

People Are the First Line of Defense
Mr. Akinkugbe explained that we must always know exactly who is using our systems.
"Your first line of defence is your people. If you do not know who is accessing your systems, then your systems are already exposed," he said.
This means that checking the identity of staff members and making sure only the right people handle sensitive information is the best way to stop cyber attacks before they even happen.
Protecting More Than Just Data
As the agency that provides digital services for the Federal Government, Galaxy Backbone works around the clock to protect government platforms. However, Mr. Akinkugbe reminded everyone that we must also protect the physical places where our data lives, such as data centers and communication facilities.
To make this happen, Galaxy Backbone works closely with national security agencies, including the Office of the National Security Adviser and the armed forces, to guard these important national assets.

We Must Work Together
Finally, he stressed that no single person or group can fight cyber threats alone. The public and private sectors must join hands instead of working in isolation.
"The reality is that collaboration is essential. We must speak to each other. Cybersecurity is the sum of all parts, not a single effort," he stated.
Mr. Akinkugbe reaffirmed that Galaxy Backbone remains fully committed to supporting this new Advisory Council. Together, we are taking a major step toward building a stronger, safer digital space for all Nigerians
